IOMSC Toolkit for Advocacy of Occupational Medicine Societies - draft for comment by Thursday 30th November

The purpose of this draft IOMSC Advocacy Toolkit is to provide IOMSC members with advice and information to assist in advocacy efforts with government. The materials in the kit should help you engage and educate politicians on occupational medicine to achieve your advocacy objectives. In this kit you will find background information on how to carry out policy briefings, advice on setting an advocacy objective, media tips, etc.

We hope that you find this toolkit helpful. It is a draft, so please send your comments to Nick Pahl (Nick.Pahl@som.org.uk) and Julie Ording (jording@acoem.org) by November 30, 2017. In particular, please do provide us with examples of advocacy that you have carried out – be it successful or unsuccessful! We could then add it to the toolkit as a “vignette.”

Knowing that many of you may not have had a chance to participate in an advocacy before, we encourage you to contact us with questions you may have. We'd also be interested in knowing if you have previous experience with advocacy and/or media so we can coordinate our efforts, e.g., as part of an advocacy sub-group of the IOMSC.

By the way, there will be an advocacy training session using this toolkit at the ICOH Dublin meeting in 2018 – details to follow.

Medicine in Australia: Balancing Employment and Life (MABEL) survey

The 10th wave of the MABEL (Medicine in Australia: Balancing Employment and Life) Survey has recently been sent to over 20,000 doctors in Australia who have previously responded.  This is a unique chance to contribute to independent and rigorous evidence about doctors working lives and how they are affected by the health care system. Those who have filled it out before should have received a letter or email.  If you have not filled it out but would like to, please go to www.mabel.org.au  and sign up to be included.

For more information about the MABEL Survey, please contact Michelle Best (mbest@unimelb.edu.au)
