We are delighted that Professor Carmen Lawrence has accepted our invitation to deliver the opening address at the conference. A well known political figure, serving at both State and Federal levels, Carmen began her political career as Member for Fremantle and was the first woman Premier and Treasurer of a State government. She has held various portfolios in government and opposition including in health, environment and industry. Her subsequent career in academia reflects her ongoing interest in social change.

Occupational and Environmental Physician and President of AFOEM


As context to this diverse meeting, Peter’s presentation on Monday 21st August will lead us to reflect on current occupational health strategies and practice in relation to international benchmarks and trends, and be challenged and inspired to focus on future opportunities for occupational health. 

Peter is the current President of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. As well as working in private practice in Perth, he is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Medicine, the University of Notre Dame, Fremantle.

Travel Medicine Specialist and keen historian

In addition to his technical presentation on travel medicine, Dr Peter Burke has kindly agreed to share with us his other great passion; the life and times of Irish engineer CY 'Connor.  O'Connor is best known for his work in Western Australia, especially the Construction of Fremantle Harbour. Peter will draw on his recent book "Wettening Australia" to recount this legendary and tragic story. This will be a highlight of the Conference Dinner.

Hugh Denehy Oration, Wednesday 23rd August

Occupational and Environmental Physician

ANZSOM is pleased to welcome Dr Joel Silbert to deliver the 2017 Hugh Denehy Oration, in honour of one of ANZSOM's founding father, Dr Hugh Denehy (1925-1996). Joel is well known in the field of occupational medicine in Western Australia, having founded the OSH Group, the largest privately owned multidisciplinary and integrated specialist-level advisors in human capital risk management in the State.

He is a Fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, a qualified Independent Medical Examiner, Approved Medical Specialist for Workcover (WA) and an Expert Witness in the District Court. He is a Past Chair of AFOEM. He is the Chief Medical officer for the operators of the largest public and private rail networks in WA and has established and chairs Independent Expert Advisory Panels for private enterprise and government. He also sits on special interest groups reporting to various academic and government agencies.
